Our Solutions : e-Proxemis

Proteomics is under constant revision both in the rate of data accumulation and in the diversity of the biological information being generated through a multitude of technologies. Today, life scientists are inundated by the massive amount of data that is stored in numerous biological databases and analyzed with a variety of bioinformatics tools. These ever-growing and ever-changing resources pose an important challenge to life scientists aiming to maximize the pertinence of their research: "Which tools to use?", "Under what conditions?", "To answer which questions?" are among the numerous questions being faced.

proxemis       The e-Proxemis platforms is our response to these scientists.

Our goal is to give life scientists the bioinformatics background they need through a self-learning platform that mirrors real-world situations with dynamic content.

e-Proxemis is the refinement of the successful Proxemis concept that for the last three years has involved a physical classroom setting for a weeklong, proteomics-intensive tutorial. The classroom version continues to enjoy success with corporate clients, and the jump to a Web-based portal  allows the same rich content to be enjoyed by a disparate group of scholars at their own pace and on their own time.

Users advance, via their own personalized workspace, through increasingly demanding scenarios and case studies with access to a variety of resource tools and databases. Scientists can test their knowledge throughout the learning process and are directed towards further scenarios, case studies and resources. New coursework is added on a regular basis, ensuring a reservoir of fresh data fur further learning sessions.

The educational level of e-Proxemis ranges from easy to complex, with the basic level being the proper starting point for life scientists just beginning to use bioinformatics resources. The categories of users include:
  • Life scientists conducting research in either an industrial or academic environment and wishing to use state-of-the-art bioinformatics technologies
  • Computer scientists and biology technicians desiring to understand the major issues concerning representation and analysis of protein sequences
  • Heads of laboratories and managers with a biological background wanting to maintain their knowledge level in bioinformatics
By taking a real life, example-based training approach, e-Proxemis will help non-bioinformaticians make the best of available resources in order to generate more pertinent knowledge.

In July 2006, e-Proxemis became an educational platform for the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB). e-Proxemis is now located on the SIB's renowned ExPASy server, thus offering to the scientific community a diverse array of tailored learning from a single location.
