Geneva, Switzerland - Geneva Bioinformatics S.A. (GeneBio) appoints INFOCOM Corporation (INFOCOM) to represent its distribution of the SIB Databases in the Japanese market to Commercial End Users and Bioinformatics Providers. The SIB Databases include SWISS-PROT, PROSITE and SWISS- 2DPAGE, which provide in-depth knowledge essential for research optimisation. GeneBio has been the exclusive agent of the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, for the world-wide distribution of these comprehensive annotated proteomics databases since 1998.Nasri Nahas, Chief Operating Officer of GeneBio states, "We are eager to have a leading and renowned IT organization such as INFOCOM as our distributor in the Japanese market. Japanese researchers in the life-sciences field are performing cutting-edge research, and we believe that our collaboration with INFOCOM will facilitate the access to these key state-of-the-art databases".

INFOCOM Corporation has been working in collboration with GeneBio since 1999 with respect to the SIB Databases. Kikuo Ohgaki, General Manager of INFOCOM's Bioscience department, states, "We consider that this opportunity to broadly represent the SIB Databases in Japan has great significance in increasing our business presence, and playing a key role in the Japanese bioscience market, and we are glad to be able to further enhance a lasting cooperative relationship with GeneBio".

SWISS-PROT Knowledgebase, maintained by the SIB and the European Bioinformatics Institute, is the curated protein sequence database, which strives to provide a high level of annotation offering a minimal level of redundancy and high level of integration with other databases.

PROSITE is a database of protein families and domains. It consists of biologically significant sites, patterns and profiles that help to reliably identify if a new sequence belongs to a known protein family. It is based on the observation that while there are a huge number of different proteins, most of them can be grouped on the basis of similarities in their sequences, into a limited number of families.

SWISS-2DPAGE is an annotated two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2-D PAGE) and SDS-PAGE database that assembles data on proteins identified on various 2-D PAGE maps.
