Database of protein domains, families and functional sites

PROSITE is a database of biologically significant protein domains and patterns formulated in such a way that with appropriate computational tools it can be used rapidly and reliably to identify which domains are present in a protein (if any), hence give a hint of what the protein function might be.

Applications

Mainly useful to understand what a new protein function might be. The psscan tool will help performing the search for PROSITE patterns in a new sequence.

Key features

  • Signatures are linked to an annotation document containing the information on the protein domain detected by the signature (i.e the origin of its name, taxonomic occurrence, domain architecture, function, 3D structure, main characteristics of the sequence, domain size and literature references)
  • Signatures are associated with corresponding ProRules , which contain information for the automated annotation of domains of a new protein in a standardized format similar to that used by the UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot database
  • Information stored in ProRule can be accessed via ScanProsite, which provides additional features such as active sites or disulfide bonds associated with a particular domain
